Brenda Miller is the author of the memoir Love You, Bye: A Daughter’s Journey in Essays and Poems (Skinner House Books, 2026), which chronicles her experience as a caregiver to her aging parents through braided essays and poems. She has also published five essay collections and is co-author of Tell It Slant: Creating, Refining, and Publishing Creative Nonfiction, a widely adopted craft book now in multiple editions. A seven-time Pushcart Prize winner, Miller is Professor Emerita of English at Western Washington University, where she founded the MFA program in Creative Writing and served as Editor-in-Chief of The Bellingham Review. She is credited with coining the term “hermit crab essay,” which has become standard terminology in creative writing pedagogy.
